The author was born in Jegadhabi, a remote village in Karur district of Tamil Nadu in an agricultural family. After early education in Karur, he chose engineering and graduated from the University of Madras, India with a bachelor's and a master's degree. Later he obtained a Ph. D from West Virginia University in the United States.
